Frequently Asked Questions

How many extra calories do I need during pregnancy?
First trimester: No extra calories needed (0-50 cal). Second trimester: Additional 340 calories/day. Third trimester: Additional 450 calories/day. These are general guidelines - individual needs may vary based on pre-pregnancy weight and activity level.
What is the recommended weight gain during pregnancy?
For women with normal pre-pregnancy BMI: 11.5-16 kg. Underweight: 12.5-18 kg. Overweight: 7-11.5 kg. Obese: 5-9 kg. Weight gain should be gradual, with most gain occurring in the second and third trimesters.
How much protein do I need during pregnancy?
Protein needs increase during pregnancy: First trimester: 1.1g per kg body weight. Second and third trimesters: 1.2g per kg body weight. This supports fetal growth, placenta development, and increased maternal blood volume.
Are there any foods to avoid during pregnancy?
Yes, avoid raw/undercooked meat, fish high in mercury, unpasteurized dairy, raw eggs, and excessive caffeine. Focus on well-cooked foods, pasteurized products, and plenty of fruits and vegetables washed thoroughly.
