About This Tool

Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) using the WHO and Asian/Indian standards. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. Our calculator uses the modified BMI cutoffs recommended for Indian and Asian populations, which have different health risk thresholds compared to Western standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple measure that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you're at a healthy weight. It's calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.
Why are Indian BMI standards different?
Indians and Asians tend to have higher body fat percentage at the same BMI compared to Caucasians. This means health risks like diabetes and heart disease occur at lower BMI values. The WHO recommends using Asian-specific cutoffs: Normal < 23, Overweight 23-24.9, Obese ≥ 25.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It may not be accurate for athletes (who have more muscle), elderly people, or pregnant women. For a complete health assessment, consult a healthcare provider.
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
For Indians and Asians, a BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 is considered normal. A BMI of 23-24.9 is overweight, and 25 or above is considered obese according to Asian-specific guidelines.
