Frequently Asked Questions
What is Glycemic Index (GI)?
GI measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar on a scale of 0-100. Low GI (<55) foods raise blood sugar slowly. Medium GI (56-69) moderately. High GI (>70) causes rapid spikes. Diabetics should prefer low GI foods.
What's the difference between GI and GL?
GI measures speed of blood sugar rise, GL measures total impact. Watermelon has high GI but low GL (small portion has little sugar). GL = (GI × carbs per serving) / 100. Both matter for diabetics.
Best Indian foods for diabetics?
Good choices: Ragi, oats, barley, most dals, vegetables, paneer, eggs, nuts. Moderate: Brown rice, whole wheat roti. Avoid/limit: White rice, maida, potatoes, sweets, fruit juices.
Can diabetics eat rice?
Yes, but choose wisely. White rice has high GI. Better options: Brown rice, hand-pounded rice, or mix rice with lots of vegetables and dal. Keep portion to 1/2 cup cooked. Avoid rice at dinner.
