Frequently Asked Questions

What are the six tastes in Ayurveda?
Sweet (Madhura), Sour (Amla), Salty (Lavana), Pungent (Katu), Bitter (Tikta), and Astringent (Kashaya). Ayurveda recommends including all six tastes in every meal for complete nutrition and satisfaction.
Why do all six tastes matter?
Each taste provides specific nutrients and has distinct effects on the doshas. Missing tastes create cravings and imbalances. For example, if bitter and astringent tastes are missing (common in modern diets), Pitta and Kapha doshas get aggravated.
How do tastes affect doshas?
Sweet, sour, salty increase Kapha and decrease Vata. Pungent, bitter, astringent increase Vata and decrease Kapha. Pitta is increased by sour, salty, pungent and decreased by sweet, bitter, astringent. Your ideal taste balance depends on your Prakriti.
